As Happy As Happy Can Be
Otis Gluppy was a happy person. He was happy all day, from the crack of dawn to the edge of midnight, every day of the week. He was even happy when he was sound asleep. It frequently was said of Otis Gluppy that he was as happy as happy can be.
Otis did not talk much, but he did laugh a great deal, at everyone and everything. Indeed, his constant display of abundant mirth was the most striking element of his personality. He regularly laughed to excess, regardless of the situation, without any hint of shame.
Although Otis was thoroughly happy in himself, he lived in a world that was moving toward a moment of unspeakable doom. While the masses allowed themselves to be distracted by the allure of passing trifles, stealthy forces of evil gathered in the shadows.
When the hour of foul reckoning finally arrived, and thousands upon thousands of demons stepped out of the darkness to seize control of the earthly realm, mankind quickly fell without a fight. Otis saw it happen before his eyes, but he never stopped laughing.
With the whole of humanity now enslaved by the vile power of a wicked dominion, only Otis Gluppy was able to be happy. One of the demons, observing Otis and hearing his laughter, was prompted to say, "Truly, that fellow is as happy as happy can be."
