Liz Truss: Leading the United Kingdom from Bad to Worse

Liz Truss, the brittle, shrewish woman who, after a prolonged battle to gain control within the Conservative Party, was finally able to succeed Boris Johnson as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on September 6, 2022, is now set to lead her hapless nation from bad to worse. Most citizens of the United Kingdom, having been bruised and offended by the many abominations that flourished under Johnson's haphazard leadership, will now be hoping (and, given the extremity of the current situation, perhaps even praying) for the best, but it is likely that the difficult conditions in Britain, which are already the worst in a lifetime, are destined to quickly degrade as a result of Liz Truss taking up residence in Downing Street.

After heedlessly ruling the United Kingdom for twelve years, the Conservatives have, it seems, nearly expended their potential for unmitigated corruption. They cling to stale bluster, appearing to have lost all purpose apart from the reckless pursuit of brazen greed. Liz Truss herself is widely perceived as mainly being a relentless promoter of Liz Truss, a ruthless figure who seeks glory for its own sake, without being troubled by the hindrance of firm opinions, distinct policies, or moral principles. She aspires to serve grandly, in the arch, overbearing manner of Margaret Thatcher (apparently forgetting that Thatcher's premiership came to a pitiable end), but her actual experience will probably be more ghastly than grand.

The problems that will soon overwhelm Liz Truss are clear and formidable: an ongoing pandemic of Covid-19 that has hit the United Kingdom particularly hard, the extensive mess that has ensued from the ham-fisted dishonesty of Brexit, and the highest cost of living in decades. Undeniable evidence of widespread hardship in Britain is mounting week by week. During the coming winter, millions of people will be in danger of going hungry and freezing in their homes. So far, Liz Truss has offered no sign that she grasps the urgent necessity of turning away from the Conservative priorities that have fostered those problems, which is not surprising in a shallow grafter who is known for advancing herself at the expense of others.

After being in power for over a decade, it is the Conservatives who must accept most of the blame for the grievous state of the United Kingdom in 2022. Their mode of governance, becoming little more than overt gangsterism when Boris Johnson resided in Number 10, has brought Britain to its knees, and now threatens to undermine the stability of its daily life. The Conservatives, by catering to the selfish demands of those whose extreme wealth allows them to dwell high above the common needs of the average person, have done nearly as much damage to the United Kingdom as Adolph Hitler and the Nazis did during the years of World War II. Liz Truss is hellbent on continuing with the Conservative destruction of Britain's future.

At the other end of the equation in British politics, Sir Keir Starmer, who was chosen to be leader of the Labour Party when Jeremy Corbyn, a forthright socialist, stepped down in 2020, is totally limp and utterly ineffective, with considerably less appeal than a cold cup of weak tea. Instead of being a strong voice of opposition, boldly defending the rights of working people, he is primarily concerned with ridding the Labour Party of the socialists who, throughout its history, have been its backbone. The truth, of course, is that Keir Starmer and Liz Truss are both on the payroll of the capitalist dictatorship that rules every Western nation. If they are contenders in the next general election, they will be playing an empty game of make-believe.

Update: On October 20, 2022, Liz Truss was deposed by angry members of her own party, forced to resign as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after having served for a mere forty-four days. She will be remembered (to the extent that she is remembered at all) as being the least efficient, and most wrongheaded, leader in British history.
